Pain level: 3/10
Recovery time: 1 to 3 weeks
Resumption of physical activities: 2 to 6 weeks

In most cases, gynecomastia (increased glandular breast tissue in boys and men) is idiopathic, which means no medical cause can be found.

However, there are sometimes underlying factors that may cause this condition and they should first be investigated. These include problems with the endocrine system (hormonal disorders, obesity), substance abuse (drugs, alcohol) among others.

Abnormally enlarged breasts in men are often accompanied by weight gain in the chest area. To treat this condition, liposuction may be a good course of action.

Procedures to treat gynecomastia are effective in reducing breast size and improving the overall aesthetics of the chest.

Dr. Boudana performs these procedures in a private clinical setting, and the treatments are not covered by health insurance. The treatments are at the patient’s expense. However, under certain circumstances, health insurance may cover the procedures if they are done by surgeons at a hospital recognized by your health insurance plan. In this case, the patient would not have to pay for the treatment.

Where is the surgery performed?

Dr. Boudana only operates on patients in private state-of-the-art operating rooms accredited by Accreditation Canada. This accreditation is a guarantee that the facilities meet stringent safety and quality standards.

Consultation preparation

To prepare for the consultation, compile all relevant health information (list of medications, doctors’ reports, list of previous surgeries, mammogram reports if performed, etc.)

Dr. Boudana will ask about your medical history and whether there is a history of cancer or chronic illness in your family.

What happens in the consultation?

During the consultation, Dr. Boudana will listen attentively to your expectations regarding the appearance of your chest.

Dr. Boudana will examine your chest and consider all the factors that may influence the results of the treatment. These include the size and consistency of the glandular tissues, skin quality, the presence of excess chest fat, and the size and position of the nipples and areolas.

Dr. Boudana will then photograph your chest from different angles and place the photographs in your medical record. These photographs will be kept strictly confidential.

Techniques and scars

There are several surgical techniques to treat gynecomastia and Dr. Boudana has been trained in the most recent ones.

Pull-through technique: This technique first uses liposuction to remove excess fat and isolate the glandular breast tissue to be removed. Next, the glandular tissue is removed through the two small incisions made for the liposuction. These incisions are typically made in the crease under the breast and measure about 1 cm. This surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and the size of the scar is rather small, although it will vary from patient to patient.

Excision by hemi-periareolar incision: Excision of the excess glandular tissue is performed through an incision in the lower half of the areola where the skin of the chest meets the pinkish skin of the areola, ensuring a discreet scar. This technique may or may not be combined with chest liposuction depending on your needs. It is performed under general or local anaesthesia depending on the size of the glandular tissues to be removed.

Thoracic liposuction: Thoracic liposuction reshapes the appearance of the chest by reducing the excess fat accumulated in the pectoral region. It can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, either on its own or during one of the two glandular excision procedures described above.

Chest lifts: In rare cases, when there is significant excess glandular breast tissue and fat in the chest area, a chest lift may be beneficial immediately after surgery or in the months thereafter. This will be discussed with Dr. Boudana during the consultation.

What does the surgery entail?

The surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia depending on the technique used.

It lasts between 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours.

Following the operation, you will need someone to take you home and help and monitor you for the first 24 hours.

Once you are under anaesthesia, the skin of your breasts will be carefully cleaned with an antiseptic to prevent infection. This step is performed according to medical recommendations and standards.

Following the procedure, you will be taken to the recovery room. Wearing a compression garment is recommended for four to six weeks. The garment will be provided.

After the surgery

After surgery, you will receive a personalized follow-up. Our nurses will also be available and will perform the first dressing change at our clinic, typically one week after the surgery.

You will be given a postoperative instruction sheet when you are discharged as well as a prescription for pain medication.

All our follow-up appointments are free of charge for the first year after your surgery.
