Hyperpigmentation refers to skin patches that are darker than the surrounding areas. These typically occur as you age and from sun exposure. They tend to appear on the face and hands. These somewhat unattractive spots can make the skin appear older. Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments target this hyperpigmentation and stimulate skin rejuvenation (photo rejuvenation).

We use Lumecca® IPL, which is one of the newest and most powerful systems on the market.

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is similar to a laser, but while a laser focuses one wavelength of light at your skin, IPL releases many different wavelengths. The light from an IPL allows for a wider spectrum of targets.

IPL can treat pigment spots by targeting melanin in the skin and also vascular spots or lesions by targeting hemoglobin.

This treatment is also used for photo rejuvenation, a procedure done to enhance skin appearance for a more radiant, younger look.

After a single session, the majority of patients notice improvements in skin tone and clarity. Lumecca® works through photothermolysis, which uses optical energy to provide a comfortable photofacial treatment.

In only one to three sessions, the Lumecca® diminishes:
● Age spots (brown or reddish pigmentation);
● Vascular lesions of the face, such as spider veins and poikiloderma;
● Rosacea (redness);
● Freckles;
● Harmful effects of the sun.

How does the treatment work and what should I expect after treatment?

IPL treatment is performed without anaesthesia or sometimes under topical anaesthesia (anaesthetic cream) as it produces very little discomfort. During the treatment, the Lumecca® will emit a flash of bright light creating a slight elastic feeling on the skin. It is normal for the skin to appear red and feel a little warm after the treatment; these reactions usually disappear within an hour. Over the next 24 hours to 48 hours, the pigmentation spots will darken and the following week, the lesions will peel off, giving you a more even complexion. After the treatment of vascular lesions, the vein may whiten, disappear or change colour; these effects will subside within a few days.

What areas of the body can I treat?

Lumecca® is suitable for all parts of the body. The most common treatment areas are those that are regularly exposed to the sun. These are usually the face, neck, décolleté, legs, hands and arms.

What steps should I take before the procedure?

Avoid tanning or excessive direct sun exposure for one month before treatment.

How many sessions do I need?

You will notice an improvement in the appearance of your skin after the first session.

Multiple sessions will further enhance the results. The treatment regimen depends on the severity of the lesions, skin type, type of treatment (vascular or pigmented lesions) and energy parameters.

When will I see results?

You will see a decrease in sun spots and an improvement in your complexion a few days after the first session. The skin will look increasingly youthful and radiant over time, and results will be optimal after one or two weeks. Multiple sessions of photofacial treatment will improve the final result. For vascular treatments, such as facial telangiectasia, optimal results may take up to two weeks.

Are there any side effects?

Each treatment has potential risks and these should be discussed with Dr. Boudana during the consultation prior to treatment. However, most patients have no side effects and skin reactions usually disappear within a few hours. The skin may be sensitive to light immediately after treatment. It is therefore best to avoid sun exposure and tanning.
