Objective: To remove breast implants, and, depending on the case, inject fat into the breasts (removed by liposuction from other parts of the body) to improve shape, size, and correct asymmetry, and perform a mastopexy (breast lift).
Anaesthesia: Local or general
Procedure duration: 1.5 to 3 hours
Pain level: 2 to 5/10
Recovery time: 1 to 3 weeks
Resumption of physical activities: 4 to 6 weeks
There are various reasons you may choose to have your breast implants removed. Dr. Boudana can advise you on the solution that best suits your personal needs.
Once the implant is removed, fat taken from the abdomen, waist, thighs or other areas, may be injected into the breasts to improve the loss of size and shape. This procedure may also be combined with mastopexy (breast lift) to remove excess skin following implant removal or it may be performed on its own. In addition, patients may choose to only have a mastopexy after implant removal without any other procedures.
All options will be discussed in consultation with Dr. Boudana who will provide detailed information on the advantages and risks of each procedure.
Removal of implants without any additional procedures
If you want to remove your implants without replacing them or having any additional procedures (e.g. fat transfer or mastopexy), you may have the choice of undergoing the surgery with local or general anaesthesia. In most cases, Dr. Boudana will suggest using the same incision through which the implants were initially inserted to limit the number of scars.
Removal of implants with fat transfer (lipoaugmentation) and mastopexy (breast lift)
Once breast implants are removed, your breasts may appear smaller, asymmetrical, lacking in shape and contour. Mastopexy can help reposition the breasts, reshape tissues and provide symmetry. Mastopexy can also be combined with fat transfer. The purpose of the fat transfer is to increase breast size, improve shape, symmetry, and contour, and provide a more pronounced décolleté.
Sometimes, fat injections in the breasts are the only way to achieve a satisfactory result following breast implant removal.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts between 1.5 hours and 3 hours depending on whether a mastopexy is also performed.
Following the operation, you will need someone to take you home and help and monitor you for the first 24 hours.
Once you are under anaesthesia, the skin of your breasts will be carefully cleaned with an antiseptic to prevent infection. This step is performed according to medical recommendations and standards. The procedure then begins with the removal of the implant. Then, Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL) is performed using the SAFELipo® (Separation Aspiration Fat Equalization) technique. The fat is preserved to be reinjected into the breast via two to three 1- to 2-mm incisions, most often located along the crease under the breast.
Given the skin has already been stretched by the implant, larger quantities of fat may be injected compared to a patient who has never had breast implants. As such, you can increase breast size through fat injections, but breast augmentation will not be as pronounced as with breast implants.
Where is the procedure performed?
Dr. Boudana only operates on patients in private state-of-the-art operating rooms accredited by Accreditation Canada. This accreditation is a guarantee that the facilities meet stringent safety and quality standards.
Dr. Boudana’s patients have the choice of having their surgery done in Laval or in Saguenay.
After the surgery
After the surgery, you will receive a personalized follow-up. Our nurses will also be available and will perform the first dressing change at our clinic, typically one week after surgery.
You will be given a postoperative instruction sheet when you are discharged as well as a prescription for pain medication.
All our follow-up appointments are free of charge for the first year after your surgery.
A light-compression bra and adhesive strips can help stabilize the fat in the breasts while the injected fat cells settle.
Immediately following surgery, swelling may make breasts appear larger.
Final results and breast size may only be fully determined three months after surgery, once the swelling has gone down and fat has settled.
