Objective: Mastopexy, also known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure that improves the position and shape of a woman’s breasts. During the breast lift, excess skin is removed, and glandular tissues are reshaped.
Procedure duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
Pain level: 3/10
Recovery time: 7 to 14 days
Resumption of physical activities: 4 to 6 weeks
Why choose Dr. Boudana for your mastopexy?
With over 100 breast lifts performed in the past decade, Dr. Boudana has developed real expertise in the procedure. He will listen, guide and advise you so you reach your goal.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts between 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours.
Following the operation, you will need to have someone take you home and help and monitor you for the first 24 hours.
Where is the procedure performed?
Dr. Boudana only operates on patients in private state-of-the-art operating rooms accredited by Accreditation Canada. This accreditation is a guarantee that the facilities meet stringent safety and quality standards.
Dr. Boudana’s patients have the choice of having their surgery done in Laval or in Saguenay.
To properly prepare for the consultation, compile all your relevant medical and health information (list of medications, doctors’ reports, history of previous surgeries, mammogram reports, breast biopsies, etc.). Dr. Boudana will also ask about your medical history and your family history of breast cancer.
What happens in the consultation?
During the consultation, Dr. Boudana will listen carefully to your expectations regarding desired breast size and shape. This will help Dr. Boudana better understand your goals. As such, a large part of the consultation is dedicated to listening to you.
However, not all goals are realistic, and it is important to understand what surgery can and cannot accomplish.
Dr. Boudana will examine your breasts and assess all the factors that could influence their aesthetics. These include the size and shape of your natural breasts, skin and gland quality, and the position and size of your nipples and areolas. Breast sag is assessed by taking measurements, and more specifically by the position of the nipple in relation to the crease under the breast (see diagram).
Dr. Boudana will then photograph your breasts from different angles and place these photographs in your medical record. These photographs will be kept strictly confidential.
He will then take a 3D scan of your breasts and create simulations to illustrate the potential result. A virtual reality simulation is also offered.
Techniques and scars
Mastopexy or breast lift is a cosmetic surgery that consists in changing the shape of the breasts. This is done by removing excess skin and reshaping surrounding tissues. The underlying breast tissue is reshaped and lifted into the desired position. Excess skin is then removed, and skin is tightened to adapt to the new shape and contour of your breasts.
The surgery’s aim is to reposition the areola and nipple to a more youthful height and reshape and lift the surrounding tissue to obtain two symmetrical breasts, which do not sag.
In case of significant vertical or horizontal ptosis (breast sag), an inverted T incision is used and results in a periareolar scar (around the areola between the darker skin of the areola and the lighter skin of the breast), which continues vertically down the middle of the breast (between the lower edge of the areola and under the crease of the breast), and horizontally across the base (hidden in the crease of the breast).
More often, for moderate ptosis, the “vertical” method is preferred. With this method, scarring is reduced to its vertical and periareolar components with no horizontal scar in the submammary crease.
In some cases of very mild breast ptosis, sag can be corrected with an incision only around the areola.
It is important to understand that a mastopexy “lifts” the breasts and reshapes them for a more flattering appearance. However, it does not provide upper pole fullness. Breasts are naturally pear-shaped. Thus, if your objective is to achieve greater upper pole fullness or increase the size of your breasts, breast implants or fat transfer breast augmentation is recommended.
What does the surgery entail?
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours.
Following the operation, you will need someone to take you home and help and monitor you for the first 24 hours.
Once you are under anaesthesia, the skin of your breasts will be carefully cleaned with an antiseptic to prevent infection. This step is performed according to medical recommendations and standards.
Following the operation, you will be taken to a recovery room with a bandage on each breast.
Depending on the case, a compression bra may be recommended either immediately after surgery or in the days following the surgery.
After the surgery, you will receive a personalized follow-up. Our nurses will also be available and will perform the first dressing change at our clinic, typically one week after surgery.
You will be given a postoperative instruction sheet when you are discharged as well as a prescription for pain medication.
All our follow-up appointments are free of charge for the first year after your surgery.
