Some women perceive their labia minora (inner lips) and clitoral hood to be disproportionate in size. It should be noted that there are no anatomical and aesthetic standards regarding the size and appearance of the labia minora. As such, the desire to have surgery is based solely on physical discomfort and self-consciousness regarding anatomy.

There are several reasons for wanting to have labia minora reduction surgery. In some cases, excess skin on the labia minora or clitoral hood may cause pain or itching from friction, irritation or infection. In addition, an elongated labia minora, sometimes one that hangs below the labia majora, can cause discomfort during sex and negatively impact a women’s enjoyment and pleasure.

Are you a good candidate for labiaplasty?

There are several not uncommon problems that can cause you to feel embarrassed about your vagina. These include:

  • The inner labia protrude outside your outer labia, are excessive or unsightly
  • The labia are out of shape, irregular or uneven
  • The labia have changed appearance following childbirth
  • The clitoral hood is excessive and “buries’ the clitoris
  • The labia majora (outer lips) are excessive or unsightly

Some women consider surgery because of aesthetic or cosmetic reasons – their labia may be visible through swimwear or underwear, or the appearance of their vagina might make them feel embarrassed or lacking confidence during sexual activity, particularly with a new partner. The condition is usually bilateral (both sides) but in some cases may only involve one side.

What are the procedure techniques and scars

Dr Boudana’s aim is to delicately and carefully remove the excess tissue and reshape the region without interfering with the nerves or sexual sensation. The incisions are quite discreet too. It is important to only ever have labiaplasty done by a specialist plastic surgeon who is used to handling delicate tissue, preserving nerves and can perform accurate and precise wound closure.

Labiaplasty can also be combined with a clitoral hood reduction should this also be an area of concern.

Scarring varies between patients but after about six months to a year, the scarring will hardly be noticeable at all. One of the main benefits of labiaplasty is that any scars can be hidden in the folds of the labia. Dr Boudana uses proven techniques and his extensive experience to keep any scarring to a minimum. Over and above slight scarring, patients may also notice some slight discolouration in the area for a few months. This will improve over time though and the discolouration doesn’t look that different to the rest of the skin and tissue in the area.

Procedure details

Surgical reduction of excess labial tissue is a delicate, safe and effective way to deal with these concerns and problems. Dr Boudana will trim back the labia minora to a plane level to the labia majora. However, he might undertake a wedge excision technique, in more pronounced cases. In some instances, Dr Boudana may undertake labia majora reduction or clitoral hood reduction. At the time of consultation, Dr Boudana will examine you and will discuss and recommend the best method in your particular case.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, which means that you will be awake and conscious during the surgery. A local anaesthetic is injected with a very fine needle. Contrary to what you may think, the injection is not very painful.

There are several surgical methods available and Dr. Boudana will perform the one adapted to your anatomy and desired outcome to obtain the best result.

After surgery, you should avoid long walks for two weeks, and refrain from engaging in sexual activity for six weeks.

After the surgery, you will receive a personalized follow-up. Our nurses will also be available and will perform the first dressing change at our clinic, typically one week after surgery.

You will be given a postoperative instruction sheet when you are discharged as well as a prescription for pain medication.

Results

Every patient heals differently but your body will need time to rest and recover. Your results will gradually begin to take shape over the course of several weeks. All swelling will need to subside before you can see the final outcome. In most instances, final results are visible after about three months.
