Should You Consider A Breast Reduction?

Large breasts are partially genetic, meaning some women will just naturally have larger breasts. However, other factors may influence size. These include age, weight gain, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other life events. Often, breast tonus, shape, position, and size are no longer to your satisfaction and large breasts can cause discomfort and poor self-image.

Additionally, large breasts can lead to back and shoulder pain, poor posture, and difficulty fitting into bras and clothing. The physical and psychological impacts can justify breast reduction surgery as a medically necessary procedure rather than a purely cosmetic one.

Breast reduction surgery is a simple, effective procedure that can help you achieve desired results regarding breast size and aesthetics. It is one of the most widely performed cosmetic surgeries and has very high satisfaction rates and low surgical risks.

Are you a good candidate for breast reduction?

Overly large breasts can cause health and emotional problems, including self-consciousness, physical discomfort, and interference with the ability to exercise.

Breast reduction can be a good option for you if you:

  • Are bothered by feeling that your breasts are too large
  • Have breasts that limit your physical activity
  • Experience back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • Have shoulder indentations from bra straps
  • Have skin irritation beneath the breast crease

It’s also important to be good in overall health, to be a non-smoker, and to have realistic expectations.

What are the procedure techniques and scars

Breast reduction surgery involves reshaping the breasts, skin envelope and glandular tissues. Excess breast tissue and fat are removed, the breast is reshaped and lifted, excess skin is also removed to ensure a tight fit around the newly shaped breasts.

The aim of the surgery is above all else to reduce breast size. However, the nipples and areola may also be repositioned, the tissues lifted, and excess skin removed to achieve symmetry between both breasts.

In case of significant vertical or horizontal ptosis (breast sag), an inverted T incision is used and results in a periareolar scar (around the areola between the darker skin of the areola and the lighter skin of the breast), which continues vertically down the middle of the breast (between the lower edge of the areola and under the crease of the breast), and horizontally across the base (hidden in the crease of the breast).

Sometimes, for moderate ptosis and moderately sized breasts, the “vertical” method is preferred. With this method, scarring is reduced to its vertical and periareolar components with no horizontal scar in the submammary crease.

Why choose Dr. Boudana for your breast reduction?

With close to a thousand successful breast reduction surgeries under his belt, Dr. Boudana has developed a great deal of expertise in the field. He will be able to guide and advise you in achieving your goal.

Procedure details

During the consultation, Dr. Boudana will listen carefully to your expectations regarding desired breast size and shape. This will help Dr. Boudana better understand your goals.

As such, a large part of the consultation is dedicated to listening to you. However, not all goals are realistic, and it is important to understand what surgery can and cannot accomplish.

Dr. Boudana will examine your breasts and assess all the factors that can influence the aesthetic result. These include the size and shape of your natural breasts, skin and gland quality, and the position and size of your nipples and areolas. Breast sag is assessed by taking measurements, and more specifically by the position of the nipple in relation to the crease under the breast.

Dr. Boudana will then photograph your breasts from different angles and place these photographs in your medical record. These photographs will be kept strictly confidential.

He will then take a 3D scan of your breasts and create simulations to illustrate the potential result. A virtual reality simulation is also offered.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours.

Following the operation, you will need someone to take you home and help and monitor you for the first 24 hours.

Once you are under anaesthesia, the skin of your breasts will be carefully cleaned with an antiseptic to prevent infection. This step is performed according to medical recommendations and standards.

Following the operation, you will be taken to a recovery room with a bandage on each breast.

Depending on the case, a compression bra may be recommended either immediately after surgery or in the days following the surgery.

After the surgery, you will receive a personalized follow-up. Our nurses will also be available and will perform the first dressing change at our clinic, typically one week after surgery.

You will be given a postoperative instruction sheet when you are discharged as well as a prescription for pain medication.

All our follow-up appointments are free of charge for the first year after your surgery.

Results

Breast reduction is considered a long-lasting procedure. Unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, your breasts will remain a consistent size. However, the effects of gravity and aging will eventually cause your breasts to droop over time.
