Should You Consider an Arm Lift?

As you age, the skin on your arms changes, often sagging and becoming loose. Fluctuations in weight may also result in fat accumulation on the arms. Sometimes this can cause body image issues and people will avoid baring their arms or wearing sleeveless clothing.

The objective of an arm lift procedure is to remove excess skin and fat on the arms, from the armpit to the elbow.

An arm lift, combined with liposuction, may be the solution to more flattering arms and a boost to your self-esteem.

Are you a good candidate for arm lift?

To be a potential candidate for an arm lift, you must be a non-smoking adult who is not extremely overweight, have no medical condition that could slow down or impede a post-procedure healing process, and, of course, have a substantial amount of loose skin on the underside of your upper arms.

What are the procedure techniques and scars

There are several surgical techniques and Dr. Boudana has a great deal of experience in all of them. The location of scars can therefore vary depending on the technique used. Incisions can be placed on the inner or outer arm, or close to the armpit. Your skin tone, position of fat, muscle position and tone, and any prior scars will help determine which technique will give you the best results.

  1. Full brachioplasty
A complete approach to brachioplasty involves the removal of excessive upper arm fat by liposuction and then tailoring the overlying skin. Incisions will extend down the inner aspect of the arm to just above the elbow. This surgery will address the ‘tuckshop’ arms as it will remove unwanted fat and skin.
  2. Mini-brachioplasty
This approach is recommended for patients who have minimal excess skin and good skin tone. The incisions are shorter and hidden in the armpit. The advantage with a mini-brachioplasty is with shorter incisions and surgery times. However, a mini-brachioplasty cannot to the same extent address skin and stretch marks that can be achieved with a longer incision, or the full brachioplasty.

Procedure details

During the consultation, Dr Boudana will be very attentive to your expectations.

Dr. Boudana will examine your arms and will consider all factors that can influence the aesthetic result such as arm width and shape, the amount of fat, skin quality, and the position of the excess skin (arms, forearm, elbow, axillary region).

Dr. Boudana will discuss scar location and length with you. He uses different techniques and adapts his choice of technique to the patient’s expectations and clinical findings. He can propose an arm lift with an inner arm or outer arm incision, or a short incision in the underarm (axillary).

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and combines liposuction of the arms, forearms, and even chest area, followed by the removal of excess skin.

This operation lasts between 1.5 hours and 3 hours depending on the extent of the excess skin and fat.

An arm lift is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day as the operation. You will be discharged after thorough postoperative monitoring.

You will need to have a companion bring you home and monitor you for the first 24 hours. We also recommend having someone to help you with daily tasks for the first week following surgery.

After the surgery, you will have to wear a compression garment for two to six weeks to reduce swelling and compress the scars. We provide the compression garment and place it before you wake up in the recovery room.

Later on, you will receive a personalized follow-up. Our nurses will also be available and will perform the first dressing change at our clinic, typically one week after surgery.

You will be given a postoperative instruction sheet when you are discharged as well as a prescription for pain medication.

All our follow-up appointments are free of charge for the first year after your surgery.
