08 Aug Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery increases the volume of the breasts for women with naturally small breasts, as well as replacing depleted volume following breastfeeding or weight loss.
It can also be used to change the breast shape for women who have developmental and chest wall deformities, such as tubular breasts or asymmetry. During this surgery, we will place implants into the breast pocket to augment the size and improve the shape of your breasts. With this, I often get asked about the difference between saline and silicone implants, and their risks and benefits.
Silicone gel breast implants
Silicone implants are comprised of silicone shells or pockets that are pre-filled with a silicone gel. The silicone gel is a thick, sticky fluid that closely mimics the look and feel of natural breast tissue. In comparison to saline, it flows and sits differently within its shell and can often create a more natural look and feel to the breasts.
Silicone gel poses no risk of injury or rejection by the immune system. Ruptures in these kinds of implants can happen, but do not happen as often as in saline implants. Overall, they tend to be more durable than saline implants.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are comprised of a silicone shell similar to silicone implants, with the exception that the implants are filled with a saline solution. Saline is sterile water. Ruptures can occur with saline breast implants as well, however, are considered safer as the saline is absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. When a saline implant ruptures, the breast will deflate back to its pre augmentation state.
Depending on the patient, sometimes saline implants can cause a rippling or wrinkling appearance under the skin. For this reason, these implants are less commonly used in modern plastic surgery as silicone implants tend to look a little more natural. Saline breast implants can be administered after the shells are placed in the body, allowing for a smaller incision during surgery.
At the end of the day, no two breast augmentation procedures are the same. Though implant type plays a large role, your results depend on more than saline vs silicone implants. They depend on a carefully performed evaluation of your personal needs followed by a skillful surgeon with experience. Other factors that you will need to consider include:
- Your personal preferences
- Your existing amount of breast tissue
- Implant size and profile
- Your body proportions
