Blepharoplasty - Upper eyelids

Treatment Overview

Objective: To remove the excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid, which makes you appear older and can interfere with your vision.
Anaesthesia: Local
Procedure duration: 45 minutes
Pain level: 1/10
Recovery time: 1 week
Resumption of physical activities: 1 week

As you age, it is common for the eyelids to droop, and excess fat and skin to gather on the upper eyelids. Skin can sag and, in extreme cases, cover the eyelashes, making it difficult to apply makeup.

A sensation of heaviness and eye fatigue at the end of the day are also common.

Sagging skin around the eyelids can also make you appear tired and older.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is an effective and painless surgery.

Performed under local anaesthesia, the recovery time is minimal.

The procedure

The operation is performed under local anaesthesia, which means that you are awake and conscious during the procedure. Excess skin on the eyelids is removed. If there is excess fat behind the muscle (usually on the inner corner of the eye) or under the eyebrow, it is also removed.

The wound is closed with a very fine thread, which is only visible at the edge of each incision. These sutures will need to be removed five to seven days later by one of the nurses at the clinic.

Where is the surgery performed?

Dr. Boudana only operates on patients in private state-of-the-art operating rooms accredited by Accreditation Canada. This accreditation is a guarantee that the facilities meet stringent safety and quality standards.

The incision is placed in the upper palpebral crease. This is the natural fold of the upper eyelid, several millimetres above the eyelashes. Therefore, it is usually not visible when the eye is open.

Often, the scar ends at a crow’s foot fold (more toward the outer corner of the eye) and blends in with the natural folds of the skin.

Scars on the eyelids are usually fine and discreet.

After surgery

After surgery, swelling is possible but usually not significant. Pain is very limited.

Our nurse will remove the sutures at our clinic, five to seven days after the surgery.

We do not recommend resuming physical activities in the first week, but office work can usually be resumed the day after the surgery.

We advise staying out of the sun and wearing sunglasses.

Dr. Boudana performs more than 100 blepharoplasties per year and he will be able to advise, inform and guide you in your cosmetic surgery project.

If sagging eyelids and their appearance bother you, upper eyelid blepharoplasty is an effective, minimally painful corrective procedure with high satisfaction rates and a short recovery period.
